GDPR Privacy Notice for BACFI Members
BACFI is a recognised Specialist Bar Association, and represents the interests of employed and non practising barristers providing legal services in commerce, finance and industry.
BACFI is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information. This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal information about you during your membership of BACFI in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
BACFI is a “data controller”. This means that we are responsible for deciding how we hold and use personal information about you. We are required under data protection legislation to notify you on the information contained in this privacy notice. We may update this notice at any time.
It is important that you read this privacy notice so that you are aware of how and why we are using such information.

BACFI will comply with data protection law. This says that the personal information we hold about you must be:
1. Processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner.
2. Collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes that we have clearly explained to you and not used in any way that is incompatible with those purposes.
3. Relevant to the purposes we have told you about and limited only to those purposes.
4. Accurate and kept up to date.
5. Kept only as long as necessary for the purposes we have told you about.
6. Kept securely.
The kind of information we hold about you
Personal data, or personal information, means any information about an individual from which that person can be identified. It does not include data where the identity has been removed (anonymous data).
We will collect, store and use the following categories of personal information about you:
· Personal contact details such as name, title, address, telephone numbers and personal email addresses.
· Details of your place of work.
· Inn and date of call.
How your personal data is collected
We collect personal data from our initial subscription form, which is completed by incoming members when joining BACFI, and from any subsequent updated information which you may provide. We also collect information when you voluntarily complete BACFI surveys or provide feedback. We process this information in accordance with your subscription, our legitimate interests and with your consent.
Website usage information is collected using cookies.
How we will use this information about you
We will only use your personal information in accordance with the law. Most commonly, we will use your personal information in the following circumstances:
· To send you relevant details of BACFI events or third party events.
· To send you BACFI newsletters.
· To send you updates from the Bar Standards Board and the Bar Council and any other details which the BACFI committee deems relevant.
We would like to send you information, in line with the circumstances listed above, which may be of interest to you. If you have consented to receive marketing, you may opt out at a later date.
You have a right at any time to stop us from contacting you for marketing purposes.
If you no longer wish to be contacted for marketing purposes, please email the administrator at secretary@bacfi.org or write to BACFI, PO Box 4352, Edlesborough, Dunstable, Beds LU6 9EF.
We will only use your personal information for the purposes for which we collected it unless we reasonably consider that we need to use it for another reason and that reason is compatible with the original purpose. If we need to use your personal information for an unrelated purpose, we will notify you and we will explain the legal basis which allows us to do so.
Please note that we may process your personal information without your knowledge or consent, in compliance with the above rules, where this is required or permitted by law.
We will only retain your personal information for as long as you are a BACFI member.
Your duty to inform us of changes
It is important that the personal information we hold is accurate and current. Please keep us informed if your personal information changes.
You have the right to request a copy of the information that we hold about you and to check that we are lawfully processing it.
You have the right to ask us to correct any incomplete or inaccurate information we hold about you.
You may ask us to delete or remove personal information where there is no longer a good reason for us to continue to process it. You also have the right to ask us to delete or remove your personal information where you have exercised your right to object to processing (see below).
You may object to us processing your information if there is something about your particular situation which makes you want to object. You also have the right to object where we are processing your personal information for direct marketing purposes.
Request the restriction of processing
You may ask us to suspend the processing of personal information about you, for example, if you want us to establish its accuracy or the reason for processing it.
In the limited circumstances where you may have provided your consent to the collection, processing and transfer of your personal information for a specific purpose, you have the right to withdraw your consent for that specific processing at any time. To withdraw your consent, please contact the administrator. Once we have received notification that you have withdrawn consent we will no longer process your information for the purpose or purposes you originally agreed to.
We have appointed a data protection officer to oversee compliance with this privacy notice. If you have any questions about this notice or about how we handle your personal information, please contact the DPO via the administrator at secretary@bacfi.org or by post.
You have the right to make a complaint at any time to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
